Home Insurance – Will it Cover Flood Damage?

What is covered under insurance?
Homeowners insurance protects your home and possessions against many disasters, including fires. The costs of repairing or re-placing your possessions are usually covered less your deductible. It also covers the costs to repair or replace property after other events like hurricanes or tornadoes.

Additional protections may include lost use or additional living expenses, to cover costs when your home is being fixed and you cannot live there.
It's best to take pictures of the damage before calling your insurance company to file a claim. Keep receipts of any purchases you make or repairs that you do to replace your items. Document your losses. If you feel that your claim was not handled properly, you can hire a public adjuster to come to your home and assess the damage. They will then give you an estimate of the repair costs to your insurance agent.
How much time must I wait to file a claim?
Most policies cover replacement costs or cash value for items damaged in an insured peril. A damage adjuster will inspect the item to determine how much to pay.
Standard insurance policies cover water damage that is caused by an accident or neglect. It is important to inspect your house regularly and fix any issues that may arise.
